To provide a welcoming space for employees and guests to gather, garden, and relax.
For employees and guests to experience relief from the stress and anxiety which comes from being in a hospital setting.
Our Gratitude Garden is supported by a team of nurses from the Portsmouth area who value the many benefits which come from gardening together.
Stress, anxiety, and burnout are negatively impacting many of our lives. The environmental stressors which come from working in a hospital setting accumulate over time and can lead to low job satisfaction, difficulty concentrating, and can impair our ability to offer high quality care. Occupational stress alone is silently killing many Americans, accounting for an estimated 120,000 deaths per year in the United States 1 . While the estimate is slightly outdated, the Covid epidemic probably made the situation worse for many healthcare workers. Thankfully there are proven strategies we can incorporate into our lives which can help to protect ourselves from these negative effects. Nature-related activities including taking work-breaks in a garden setting, and gardening with peers, are evidence-based strategies to reduce stress, anxiety and occupational burnout.
